The Curious Case Of Clutch

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus – This axiom is better explained in “ Women love to flaunt, and men hide it in their pants” and are equally confident – The images popping up may be a bit wild but it is just a curious case of clutch. Old habits die hard and I don’t think even the Gen Y or Gen Z of today have any thing different to add here– The Wallets have continued to saddle men discretely on their hips and women love to sling on their shoulders or swing in their arms. Men only flash it out to pay and women go a step ahead to sport their style – Tote/ Satchel/Duffel/ Sling/ Clutch et all . Men carry money and cards – A Tote may carry an entire survival kit of few days except that mobile which rings from deep down and under to trigger a search attempt similar to spotting a cuckoo bird - Loud and Lost !!

The poor two fold Wallet has survived in the same fit and format sans any innovation since semi- civilised age – Perhaps a world record for sustaining the unclaimed copyright design for ages. With a marginal variation in colour and sizes a new wallet is just a make-believe impulse and the new ones also start looking the same within few months – soft and nipped . After all, being exposed to same heat and compression of the posteriors and the curve and bulge simply festooned, the poor thing turns into a leather crumb , one can hardly differentiate – The end is so consistent that we all forget how the new one looked and how many years did it survive in the rear crush yard . The moment someone notifies the distress look, the new one starts knocking to make way in your life – may be in the form of Gift (probably when wife feels pity).

Actually out of sight is out of mind and truly hips don’t lie, they are just blind. If something is not visible to us while we carry, how much should it matter for others in a restaurant or in a shopping mall ? The wallets have, hence, been in oblivion and have failed to trigger any style quotient for themselves. Although the bond is hip-locked but the wallet is bound to get fatter and D-shaped with age and its fetish for coins. The ATMs in the city have evolved but these personalised mobile ATMs are yet to see the winds of change . Even after serving as a treasure trove for all romantic and religious relics and a trustworthy vending machine for special needs during those naughty times the modest character does not demand any attention from the outside world. The secrets are preserved and seamlessly handed over to the new one .

From the boyhood memories of early teens, the wallets started trending like mustaches- With great power of youth came greater sense of responsibility and wallets acted as harness to our swirling temptations. A deeper wallet would mean a different social circle, a shallow wallet meant different pack of friends and even the empty wallets formed their gang and had their own modus- riding pillion on someone else’s wallet was more of a pleasure than actual need . Then came the college cupid age and dating was a craze ! Girlfriends gifted Wallets as an investment and redeemed in daily SIPs till the end without any OTP or transaction IDs – The marital life bought some sanity and glorified this object into a treasury with unified access and as a holy disciple you only have to fill it on your way back to home and the outflow is auto generated clinically without any sensations. Money is anyways a flowing entity and so it keeps flowing from one wallet to another .

After undisputed sway on the back pockets this humble wallet is now a victim of digital headwinds. The currency has changed its abode to keyboards and touch pads and E-wallets are looming with a steep pace .The physical wallets are an endangered species . I am also worried about the millions of pick pocketers across the globe- One there is an economy running to make these wallets and then there is another invisible task force to flick these wallets – it is a life support to so many in the chain – Everything should not roll up to a museum.
